This year the
cool temperatures in March have slowed down the
advance of Spring. Last April was fall of the precocious flowering of many
perennials. This year, this is not the case. Still there is some
color present in the garden this month.
The ground hugging violets and moss verbena are coming into bloom.
The
anemones, grown from bulbs planted last year, are in bloom. Their red,
white, and purple blossoms can be seen here.
The
low growing mat forming Persian Catnip, Nepeta mussini,
which reaches a
height of 30 cm is now only beginning to be covered with its purple flowers.
This plant makes an
excellent ground cover or border herb. Both the foliage and flowers give
off a pleasing fragrance. By July it will have become straggly and will
need to be
cut back--only to flower again later in the season. After
clearing away the weeds in the newly planted shrub border, I see that all the
shrubs have made it through the winter. Veronica "Autumn Joy" is
already producing its lovely purple spires.
Maintenance: The
jasmine and climbing roses still need to be pruned and fertilized. If the
weather warms up, the annuals which are growing in the green house, will be
planted out.
