In Greece during Christmas time every household will have on a table, strategically placed close to the entranceway, two plates piled high with traditional sweets. The first will contain Kourambiethes which are sugared covered, crescent shaped, melt-in-your-mouth butter cookies. The second plate will be laden with Melomakarona which are spicy oval shaped cookies drenched in a honey syrup and sprinkled with walnuts. These cookies originate from Italy and come in unlimited varieties. They store well either frozen or in a tightly covered container. My favorite recipe for Biscotti comes from my dear friend, Rana. It contains whole, unsalted pistachios as well as roasted and ground hazelnuts. Both of which are readily available in Greece. But watch out for any shells!!! Additional recipes include: |
